Things to Avoid at Working from Home

If you have a virtual office package then there are a few things you need to avoid on the days you work from home:

Distractions – you need to avoid these like the plague.  This is imperative to your success!  You need to be as strict with yourself about your working hours and breaks as an employer would be with you.  It’s far too easy otherwise to become distracted by the TV, the family, the dog…the list of possible distractions is endless.

Disorganisation – set clear boundaries between home life and work life.  Keep your work documents filed away neatly and if possible set up a separate office area within the home.  Get a filing cabinet with a lock for all your papers and keep day-to-day office equipment in your desk to avoid the children helping themselves!

Discomfort – make sure you choose a space to work in that provides enough light and space to keep you comfortable.  Don’t try to use your kitchen chairs as an office chair – you’ll soon end up with back problems.

Isolation – be sure to take time for breaks throughout the day.  Its very easy to feel isolated when working from home.  Take a walk to the local shop as it’s a good way of staying connected with the local community.
